Sudan has had an insurgency happening almost every year since independence in 1956. What's not happened before is for the war to come to the capital of Khartoum. The risk of spillover is very high, especially if rapid support forces are forced out of the capital and retreat to their stronghold on the West. That would mean a lot of trouble, especially for immediate neighbors like Chad and the Central African Republic.
