The High Middle Ages
The high middle ages were an age of reason and inquiry as much as inquisition and superstition. Mediaeval has even become synonymous with torture and violence in modern pup culture. No doubt christian doctrine cast its shadow on intellectual life for the majority of human history. The middle ages would also see periods of systematic and appalling persecution of heretics, homosexuals and jews. And there were also limits to free thinking and academic pursuit.
