The Confessional and the Court of Law
In a sense everyone can be made to confess in the confessional why because God judges justly you can. But when your entire legal political imaginary is founded on the wrongful conviction of the wise, then you have some sort of sense that actually human courts get things terribly wrong. To be forced to self incriminate in a human tribunal is a radically different question altogether. So I think this eternity has something to do with the difference between those two. It is you wouldn't go to a court of law and confess it wouldn't make any sense because because it's temporarily we certainly wouldn't.
