When scientists attempt to address causation, they are immediately into metaphysics. That is, that you can't escape that. And if you're attempting to address mental causation or mental effects from physical causes, you couldn't pick a worse place to start than Cartesian philosophy. I think there's an interesting sort of inclination or disposition in the literature, philosophy of mind literature, David Scroebina,. A philosopher of mind raises this in one of his articles called contemporary dualism. He argues that there is materialism is wrongheaded and we need something like a monism.
