Among the greeks and romans, these were common ways of attempting to understand what was happening. The ancients understood that the universe had certain inclinations built into it. So maybe you could think about a trying to do divination based on the behavior or the bodies or parts of animals as sort of like the modern thing where people think that animals know first when x is going to happen.
