The Nielsen Norman groups maturity model is very similar to the one used in UX training. It's a three-step process: initial, manage and define. At level one, processes are pretty much ad hoc, chaotic, one off affairs. The problem with this first stage is that it's a total crapshoot. So if you're on a small team, it might be perfectly okay.
