In a conversation like the one we're having, there are all kinds of non-verbal aspects of communication. But when it comes to the written word, you don't have those sorts of cues. And that's what makes interpreting written text so much more difficult. Even if the writer were around to consult, you still can't get inside the writer's head any more than you can get inside a speaker's head.
