In near darkness we're very sensitive to small amounts of light. When in bright sunshine it takes a huge amount of light to make us win. We are more sensitive to the difference between one and two than the difference between 81 and 82, even highly educated people who make decisions about large sums of money show this bias. Animals are quite good at approximate number system, but the exact number system is a cultural artifact of extreme importance because it allows us to measure beyond our bodies as measurement.
