Rights replace virtue. Rights are individual and inalienable. They can't be taken away from you. And that makes liberalism look for an alternative to rule, a different way of organizing regime. What Thomas Hobbes came up with was an ocean of representation. So the fundamental right is equal and its self-preservation, it's your life.
