The Role of the Bass in Jazz
The bass is definitely the foundation for this whole thing and Paul Chambers is doing what's called a walking bass line. Jimmy Cobb plays a very restrained role on this track with his hi-hat snapping clothes on two and four kind of like that. The piano player is freed up to play more sparsely, especially at first in the spaces between Miles' phrases. Even Bill Evans is playing very sparsely but he doesn't play a whole lot during Miles’s solo.
