Learning a Language
I think as humans, we tend to want to express ourselves and our views. Our role as educators is to empower students by giving them the atmosphere or the environment that is involved in the environment. And talking to some of the participants in the class afterwards, they were saying, you know, there may be no other place that they have where they can talk about these issues. This is the one place they can go. It's very empowering for marginalized people, especially refugees. Once they're given agency and autonomy over their learning ... it makes a direct and explicit link between the acquisition of a language and their social and economic reality.
