Augustin's on Free Choice of the Will
Augustin argued in direct opposition to the Pelagian view that we humans do not have the capacity to merit salvation on our own. We can only follow God's command to be good if God helps us to do so, he said. Augustin actually faces two challenges here, the dispute with the Pelagians and the difficulty of reconciling his own teaching with the possibility of free will.
