The idea is that you find a virus that grabs on your material, you can use it as like a little laborer to build yourself a crystal out of that material. That's the sort of mind boggling party that the viruses aren't just like all swimming around, each holding their piece of the quantum dot. They arrange them in something like a crystal pattern.
