john heywood's book of proverbs was one of the most popular books printed in england during the 15 hundreds. Heywood also gives us the first use of the phrase, the hair of the dog that bit you to refer to a sip of alcohol to help soothe the toms of a hangover. A new type of comedy was starting to appear in italy which featured certain stock characters who perform sketches that were partly improvised.
