Severean's Response to the Old Man
The only other explanation is the man speaking in a dialect switched out of that dialect after that first line. That's definitely a possibility that could be in there. And certainly mannehan's responses then can be understood by Severean. So even though they got thrust into this situation of violence and distrust and they had to use violence to get out of it, Severean still shows mercy. As much he's able to. But then they steal the old man's horse. There's a lot of grayness going on in this interaction, right? Right.
