The DTCC is the central clearinghouse for all stock market trades. They handle something like, I think it's like $97 quadrillion worth of trades a year. And they are run and managed by the very banks that it serves. This is part of the reason why they turned off the buy button for GameStop stock in January. It was because hedge funds had shorted game stop and some other stocks to a level that had basically never been done before.
