The first real wind for me was a woman walked into my office in nirobe and said that she was from ruanda. It was the first time an african woman had asked me to help a problem. I think i was so beat up by then, and yet really did feel the sense that if we could get markets to work for poor women, they would have so much more dignity than what i had been seeing. And knew somewhere inside o me that i wasn't leaving till we had bilth a bank.

Jacqueline Novogratz (@jnovogratz) is the founder and CEO of Acumen.
