Chapter One of the Four Loves

Lewis originally thought that the subject of love was pretty simple. So there were two loves, distinguishing between gift love and need love. He defends this on the basis of linguistics as well as by pointing out that our human nature is inherently needful. We need each other and are also utterly dependent upon god.
