On Twitter even before the algorithm, you had people who had hundreds of thousands to millions of followers because they were famous. And if you have a huge number of followers, it's a lot more likely your stuff will go viral. I don't know who the biggest users on Mastodon are, but there are fewer celebrities and fewer people with vast numbers of followers which also tends to depress virality. So yeah, it's possible for it to go viral without an algorithm, but it's, he'd say, on the whole less likely than in previous days.
