In the 1930s it was found that if you fed rats quite significantly less they seem to live a bit longer. As we get closer and closer to humans the effect of calorie restriction seems to get less pronounced. In monkeys which is the sort of closest to humans that we've got there were these two experiments done in rhesus monkeys  which started in the late 80s and lasted for sort of 30 years after that. The results weren't 100 percent conclusive but I don't think there's a huge appetite no pun intended to repeat those lengthy trials because they're something that as I say went from like the 80s to 20 or even more recently.
