The Tropic of Orange by Karen Te Yamashita

Karen Te Yamashita's Tropic of Orange depicts a huge wave of Mexican migrants displaced by trade liberalization and driven to Southern California in search of work. In my reading the novel also creates a different kind of alternative timeline, basically a disruption of the linear narrative. The film Sleep Dealer is another speculative borderland text and like atomic Aztecs, it ultimately, I argue, suggests that migrants create what I call an alternative future.
