When Lincoln was put forward, again, as a candidate for state legislature in Illinois, Mary went to the paper that had printed it and insisted on a retraction. She would not have been taking a position that was lower in the hierarchy than the one he had previously held in Congress. But Lincoln let the nomination for state assembly stand. It was a kind of torture for him to go against his wife's wishes. He walked up and down the floor, almost crying.
