The Role of Polarization in Democracy

Shannon Watts: If polarization was bad for democracy, then how could the GOP win enough elections to gerrymandered their districts? She says making it about our identity is what allows these things to remain so relevant politically and charge politically even though we see pretty wide consensus in broad public opinion. Watts: Social media are also tools for pursuing justice and accountability. Like those pursuing justice are often institutionalized within the Democratic Party. And platforms are essential to these movements efforts at mobilizing, witnessing, and accountability.
