Torenzo Bazzoni ran a freaking fast half marathon during the 70.3 with very, very little running. I had a similar issue when I raced the triathlon world championships several years ago. Short high intensity exercise is going to cause really, really good aerobic adaptation. The number one activity that I have personally used and found in the athletes that I coach to be the best thing for maintaining fitness has been water running.
