The Handkart Expedition
Out of the 600 converted Mormons that set out for Missouri, 150 died before rescue wagons met them with more supplies. The expedition left too late in the year and they didn't make it to Salt Lake City before winter hit. Many died from starvation and others just dropped dead on the trail while still pulling their carts. It got so cold out on the plains that flesh began freezing and falling from the bones of the settlers.
