The Supreme Court Limits Freedom of Speech
The gag rule that was in Congress in the 1830s up to the Civil War said, you know, you couldn't even write to Congress or make petitions about ending slavery. But we don't see the Supreme Court weighing in on citizens' rights to petition the government until much, much later. We really don't get a lot of good jurisprudence on assembly and freedom of speech until the cases that come at the height of World War I.
