The Importance of Apologies
The key phenomena is that you are embedded in a network of connections with these other people. And there are many intermediaries out there in that network who have a stake in making peace here or getting a resolution. Part of what apologies do is they help these intermediaries make peace across a wider network. It's less about sort of the direct pairwise interaction between the person who's apologizing and whoever might be offended.
