Up until the nineteenth century, the dominant method for producing glass mirrors was creating a problem. The mirrors of this time were made with metal backing that contained large amounts of mercury. Mad hatters disease is a neurological disorder resulting from over exposure to mercury. We've discussed this on the show before.
