The History of the 8th Air Force
When they first crossed the channel, they went to a base that was very close to the front lines. They had to live off sea rations. The pyramid tents were bad. You'd be cold, so you'd put something in the stove to burn. Embers would fly up the little stovepipe and then drop back on your tent and burn a hole in your tent. So, yeah, not exactly the 8th Air Force experience of flying coming back to your bed and then getting a pass to London.
