Crucifixion is mentioned in passing in loads of places. But no writer stops to describe the details of this kind of death. The Roman statesman Cicero named crucifixion the Summer suplichium, ultimate punishment. Josephus calls it Thonatos Oiktistos, the most miserable of deaths. Origen in the third century calls it Moors to Pissima Krukis, the utterly vile death of a cross.
