Lithium is one of our oldest medications in psychiatry, going back to 1949. It didn't really gain as much ground until the 70s when Dr. Morgan's shoe and Paul Bastrop conducted experiments which led to a double blind placebo control trial that established it as an effective mood stabilizer. There may be times where you don't want to go with lithium; someone who's reenally impaired or has a significant cardiovascular disease,. You're going to think twice about starting someone if they have those comorbidities.
