The History of Mysticism in Europe

The Great European Famine lasted from 1315 to 1322, followed by the Black Death. Mysticism was a response to all of this, and it was essentially the opposite of that trend toward fear and damnation. As a general rule, Europe's Christian mystics approached God and religion through love instead of fear.
