A custom is a way of behaving or doing something, which has existed for a long time. It's not a rule or law, it's just more like a project, or a plan to do something. For example, the Peace Initiative was welcomed by both sides. Other examples include drinking tea with milk and shaking hands when you first meet someone - although since COVID came along we don't like to touch each other.
