"I think that if you are Hispanic American, I think it's so vital to learn about your history in this country before going out into the world," she says. "It made me able to navigate the world in a different way because they were centering blackness in the curriculum." Her mother was her teacher from kindergarten through five years of high school. The pair now have a good relationship.
