What's Behind the Encyclopaedia?
In order to solve a complex problem, especially a social problem, you need to understand a lot of ideas from a lot of different fields of study. This is the same philosophy that's behind liberal arts education, or, as engel says, liberal arts and sciences. And when they say science, that translation means each systematic form of knowledge. Each art has its metaphysics. Now what they mean by that is it has its theory. To critique a novel, you have to understand some literary theory. To build a house, you have to understand theories of physics and engineering. It's true of every art and science, every one of them. That's an incredible vision.
