After Lincoln's assassination and after the Civil War ends, what do you think are the long term changes in political and religious life that endure for decades afterwards? They're not just temporary changes, but they're long term changes. The war did not prove a temporary moment during which evangelical Protestants believed that they had a role to play in public life. It had a much more lasting effect. And while you saw a real splintering of the United Evangelical Front after the war, many of whom became involved in progressive politics were more conservative.
