Forward Guidance

CHAPTER

The Inevitability of Insanity

We spend an enormous amount of energy to grow food. Luckily for the US, a lot of it comes naturally through. Irrigation systems that are low or free energy effectively can't work well without supplementing with fertilizer and herbicides. All of that is an energy penalty. If you don't use fertilizer, you get lower yield. If you get lower yields, you have less food. It's sad that it's inevitable. But we're going to have to suffer a lot more insanity before people wise up.
