Stocks and Bonds Have a Down Year in 2023
The S&P 500 had the seventh worst year ever. Ten-year treasuries dropped 16%. There's never been a year where treasury bonds have fallen by 16%. The only two years where investors in a 60-40 portfolio did worse than they did in 2022 was 1931 and 1937. Outside of the Great Depression, we've never had a year where investors have done so poorly on stocks and bonds.
