The crowd clearly understood Jesus' identity claim. They took up stones for it. He didn't do it at any point other than right after he said I am. That was the step too far. We know what you've just claimed Jesus. This is eventually why they had him hung on the cross. And this is why he leaves the temple. It wasn't yet time for that final freeing work.
