What Are the Turning Points in Calling Elections?
The way that we tended to do this before involved a lot more of a reliance on exit polls. And then we would use these to make projections about the way elections were likely to go. So in a presidential election year in Mississippi, an exit poll is probably enough to tell us who won right when the polls close. But in Wisconsin or Pennsylvania, they could make errors that might lead us down a path of calling an election incorrectly.
