How Do Scientists Measure Genes?

Scientists can identify specific genes because they can actually read the code. A gen is a stretch of d and a that that codes for a specific protein. So let's suppose that at a given place in the genetic code, there's a spot on chromosome 12. And so we know that there's a jen there that's two million, 100 thousand and 16 nuclertide pairs long.
