The Lifespan of a Software Project

Research on software project management goes back to the 1960s. The idea of software engineering was coined by Brian Randall in Newcastle University. He believed that if you started with a plan and organized things into laying down the keel, making the ribs, putting on the plates, putting in the engines then presumably you would be able to scale up software like shipbuilding. But it doesn't work that way because the bigger a software project becomes, the more the complexity grows.
