As an undergraduate, David Weinberger worked in a psychology lab. He was assigned to study the phenomenon of schedule-induced polydipsia (excess drinking) His advisor had invented a new system called random interval schedules of reinforcement. The idea was if you could eliminate that time out, then maybe you would wipe out this puzzling drinking.
