The Fundamental Problem With Crowd Psychology
Early crowd psychology was based on the fantasies of outside observers who looked on crowds with fear. To them, people were anonymous, even though they weren't anonymous to each other. And so what this question revealed was less what crowds do than the fact that those studying them were outsiders and had an outside perspective.
