The Death of Leonid Brezhnev
When Leonid Brezhnev died at the end of 1982, Yuri Andropov stepped up to become the leader of the Soviet Union. As head of the KGB, it was like Andropov became a twisted Soviet Santa. He created a new division within the KGB responsible practically just for suppressing internal dissent. All you had to do was sing the wrong protest song and you'd get scooped up by Andropov's trash collectors.
