Sticky Notes: The Classical Music Podcast

CHAPTER

The Three Motives of Mollar's Second Movement

The music is driven by three motives. At one point in this first section of the second movement, Mollar uses all three together. Even if you don't perceive all three motives occurring at once, the energy and violence is overwhelming. The other defining characteristic of this movement is collapse. Every time Mollar reaches an emotional height in this music, it is as if it tumbles down a staircase, left to be exhausted at the bottom. And now we reach our first slow section of the movement, an expansion of the shadowy theme that ended the first movement.
