The Senate Declares War on Tuta and Her Kingdom
The outbreak of war between the Roman Republic and Illyria has been heavily scrutinized by later scholars. Was Rome acting as an opportunistic imperial power, looking for any excuse that they could to gain a foothold on the other side of the Adriatic? The fact that a Polybius and Appian give two very different versions of the events that's elicited the Senate's response raises an eyebrow. It is doubtful that Rome feared a burgeoning Ardean Empire on her doorstep, enough to warrant the Senate to declare war in preemptive self-defense.
