The Origins of Goths in the First Century AD

archaeology is a couple of new habits in that region of Northern Poland. They start burying corpses rather than burning them, but it's the centuries a mix of inhumation and cremation. And they start burying men with weapons. It's the so-called Vielmark culture, which looks to be about the right place for Goths in the first century AD. But there's no written Gothic record at this date from Goths themselves. We're reliant on Greicke Roman sources from the Roman world to talk about them. These first century Goths are really too far away to be very interesting to the Romans.
