Sega of Japan lost their desire to make a great competitive home console because that was the thing that was preventing them from being in business with Sony. The game is going to come to the PlayStation when it launches. Namco and now for these and all the other arcade guys, they can be like, Oh, great. We're moving all of our development platform for the arcade industry to the PlayStation platform.

Sega and the Genesis was THE underdog story of the early 90’s. In a single console generation, Sega went from ~zero to 50% US market share and dethroned Nintendo’s seemingly invincible global monopoly. But — somehow — it all then died. Two console generations later Sega was out of the hardware game entirely, and the company was sold off for pieces to a pachinko manufacturer. How on earth did this happen??
