Rachmananov's Piano Concerto
Rachmananov has made subtle adjustments to traditional forms, a much more forward thinking move than he's ever given credit for. The theme is heard but as if through a hazy fog, with bits and pieces of other themes poking their way through the texture. Of all the concerti I don't think there's any declamation of a theme as grand as this one. We've had now four different ways of building here. It's remarkable the kind of anticipation that Rachmananovsky is creating.
